Tessa Jackson ACR

Tessa Jackson has 33 years’ experience as a conservator, with over 28 years specialising in the conservation and restoration of modern and contemporary sculpture. She worked at TATE between 1994-2017 in various capacities from intern, employee and freelancer, whilst simultaneously establishing her own Surrey based, conservation and consulting business. At TATE Tessa was involved in the conservation and restoration of some of the most important sculptures of the 20th century, including Epstein’s Jacob and the Angel, Rodin’s The Kiss, Moore`s Recumbent Figure and the Hepworth sculptures in the St Ives sculpture garden.

Tessa enjoys working with diverse materials and mixed media, such as the Hepworth bronzes with string, concrete works by Donald Judd and Peter Lazlo Peri and plastics (from foam to silicone) including the works of Naum Gabo. She has made a study of the conservation and restoration of pristine surfaces and liaises with other key specialists to achieve specific bespoke finishes. She has an international reputation and has lectured and contributed to influential publications including the 2019 Getty publication “Concrete - Case Studies in Conservation Practice (Conserving Modern Heritage), “Barbara Hepworth, The Plasters: The Gift to Wakefield” and the TATE publication “Material Matters” The Conservation of Modern Sculpture.” 

Tessa has collaborated with other highly skilled conservators and professionals and is now able to bring together a bespoke team for each individual work or project in order to provide museum quality conservation services to private collectors, auction houses, insurers, commercial galleries and public institutions worldwide. 

Lyndsey Morgan

Lyndsey Morgan ACR

Modern and Contemporary Sculpture Conservator - Lyndsey Morgan has over 33 years’ experience as a conservator, specialising in sculpture since 1992. Lyndsey and Tessa met working at TATE, during which time Lyndsey was lead conservator for sculpture installation. Lyndsey’s practice encompasses a wide variety of materials, her specialisms ranging from the plastic works of Naum Gabo, to the research and treatment of artificial patinas on bronze. She has published papers on treatments in conferences for the V&A, IIC Conferences in Melbourne (2000) and Los Angeles (2016) as well as in ‘Material Matters – the Conservation of Modern Sculpture’. Lyndsey is co-director of Patina Art Collection Care Ltd.

India Carpenter

India Carpenter

Modern and Contemporary Sculpture Conservator - India Carpenter has 8 years’ experience as a conservator, achieving a Postgraduate in Conservation from the City and Guilds of London Art School in 2017. India has 18 years’ experience working directly with leading contemporary artists, including 10 years as a senior assistant with Antony Gormley. She enjoys collaborating with artists to find solutions to conservation issues arising from the use of diverse materials, from cast iron to bread. India has been involved in the installation of complex works and exhibitions at Art Basel, The Serpentine Galleries and numerous private collections and galleries worldwide.

Julia Frank

Julia Frank

Studio Technician - Julia has worked for Tessa for 15 years, maintaining the studio and its equipment and assisting Tessa on various on-site and studio projects.

Steve Honey

Steve Honey

Paint Specialist - Steve has over 28 years’ experience in spray painting and has worked with Tessa for 10 years. Steve has provided specialist paint finishes on sculptures, including works by Donald Judd, Roy Lichtenstein and Tony Smith. Working with the approval of the artist, foundation or estate, he can provide localised detail restorations or complete surface finishes on outdoor sculptures.

 
Bill Castelo

Bill Castelo

Electrician  - Bill has over 13 years’ experience specialising in restoring kinetic and electrical works for auction houses, Art foundations, TATE and Hauser and Wirth. He has worked with Tessa since 2015 on works by Giacometti and Julio Le parc. Bill is qualified to test and issue PAT testing certificates for electrical sculptures.

 

Andy Coxall

Stone Conservator - Andy has 26 years’ stone restoration experience, working on projects ranging from historical architecture to contemporary art. He is a principle tutor for the Building Conservation Masterclass ‘Conservation of Historic Concrete’ at West Dean College. Andy has worked with Tessa on concrete restoration projects for the last 10 years, including sculptures by Donald Judd and Peter Lazlo Peri.

Jamie Fairchild  

Cleaning Specialist - Jamie is responsible for introducing the DOFF system into the UK and later for the design of ‘ThermaTech’ cleaning systems. Jamie has worked with Tessa for the past 8 years on various concrete works by Donald Judd and Peter Peri in addition to stone and bronze pieces by Barbara Hepworth and steel work by Ellsworth Kelly and Tony Smith. This work has ranged from the removal of organic and other staining through to paints, lacquers and waxes. Jamie is director of Restorative Techniques.

Dr Tracey Chaplin

Conservation Scientist - Tracey specialises in the analysis and identification of artist’s materials and their degradation products. She has more than 18 years’ experience in using various analytical techniques such as polarizing light microscopy, Raman and infrared spectroscopies, cross-sectional analysis, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) analysis and X-ray fluorescence (pXRF). Tracey is also a lecturer in Conservation Science at City & Guilds of London Art School and has worked with Tessa since 2007 on various projects including works by Peter Lazlo Peri, Donald Judd and Barbara Hepworth.

Richard Rogers ACR

Metal Conservator - Richard has over 40 years experience as a metals conservator. Richard started his career in 1979 specialising in the conservation and restoration of metalwork. With his design experience he has also designed and fabricated bespoke display mounts for the Crown Jewels and recently the Queens Diamond Jubilee Gallery at Westminster Abbey.  Richard has worked with Tessa for the last 17 years to provide bespoke metalwork solutions to a variety of sculptures including Moore and Hepworth along with high quality surface lacquer finishes. His work has included a bespoke internal armature for the Peter Lazlo Peri ‘Sunbathers’ sculpture, recently displayed at the Southbank Centre. Richard is director of Richard Rogers Conservation.
